Lorelai

As I walk out on stage to the applauding audience, ending another night as Christine Daaé, I summon the brightest smile I can manage.

Jean-Paul lifts his Phantom mask, takes my hand, and lifts it into the air, and the crowd goes wild.

We receive yet another standing ovation tonight. Something I should delight in because tonight was absolutely brilliant and everyone gave more than their best.

The more shows we do, the better we become, almost transforming into the characters as our world on stage bleeds into our realities.

This is definitely living the dream, and I would take pride in my performance as much as the others are if Dmitri weren’t staring back at me from the front row of the audience before me.

He’s standing with everyone else, blending in with the excitement, but his uncanny presence makes my skin crawl.

I wasn’t expecting him tonight, so it’s odd he would come here to watch the show when he’s already seen it. The other times he came here were to pick me up once I was finished for the night.

The moment I stepped on stage and saw him, he threw me off-kilter and I struggled to focus throughout the entire performance.

Before the curtains are drawn, our eyes lock, and I know, I just know he’s not here for a social visit.

Why is he here?

I haven’t seen him since the dinner with his parents, and I’m not supposed to until Friday when we’ll discuss me moving in with him.

I’ve been trying to push the topic out of my mind, and seeing him now heightens my anxiety.

I’m not supposed to see Zakh until tomorrow, so I was hoping for a night of peace to myself, just to regroup so I could think about what I need to do over the upcoming weeks.

Now I won’t have that, and I can’t exactly turn him away. I’m already in enough trouble with Dad.

The other night when I rejoined my family for dinner after seeing Zakh, Dad was pissed at me. I lied through my teeth, telling my father how much I had to help my friend, but he thought I was out so long because I didn’t want to be around the family. Perhaps this is his doing.

I don’t know.

I go through the motions of signing autographs for my fans then head to the dressing room to change.

Within minutes of me slipping out of character and into my jeans and camisole top, the door pushes open and in walks Dmitri.

He’s always knocked, so this new behavior jars me further.

I steel my spine when he locks the door behind him and advances into the room, his stare unwavering.

“I didn’t know you were going to be here tonight,” I say, doing my best to keep the tremor out of my voice.

He comes closer. “Expecting someone else?”

My heartbeat doubles. This is not good. Why is he asking me that?

Has he seen me with Zakh?

The thought sends ice cascading down my spine.

“No, I wasn’t. It’s just surprising you came to watch me again.
